So what is it all about? What’s the core premise hidden beneath Outlast 2’s scary setting? Well, that question is a bit harder to answer. Speaking of corn, if you’ve played Outlast 2 at all, you’ll know there are plenty of terrifying cornfields to explore. Kind of like the murderous youngsters in Stephen King’s strange tale, Children of The Corn (yes I'm circling back to King again, I'm sorry). The cultists in Outlast 2 are far removed from civilization, and as such, have been left to their own devices. While Outlast 2 differs in that it’s set in Arizona, it nevertheless draws parallels to the aforementioned horror properties thanks to its themes of isolation, hostile entities, gore, and slaughter. Circling back to the topic of horror producing new horror, Stephen King’s 1996 novel Desperation uses the same sort of abandoned Nevada setting as The Hills Have Eyes (with an ancient, psychotic entity named Tak). There, the family has to fend off a creepy group of savages, and as you can guess, the outcome is pretty grim. Over the years, The Hills Have Eyes has become known for its twisted tale about a family that finds themselves trapped in the hostile deserts of Nevada. On the surface of "setting," I found slight similarities to Wes Craven’s 1977 cult classic, The Hills Have Eyes. While exploring the story of Outlast 2, I found its diverse array of horror inspirations particularly fascinating. It seems like no matter which form of media you follow, horror has a unique way of producing an infinite variation of similar, yet different, scares. Now that I’ve become embroiled in the video game realm, I’ve begun to notice little nods to my favorite horror flicks within games just like Outlast 2. After falling in love with the genre, I not only watched every horror film I could get my hands on, but documentaries into the hidden art of filmmaking as well. While playing through the game, I found myself harkening back to the endless array of horror films I grew up watching. While Outlast strictly centered around Mount Massive Asylum, Outlast 2 is set after the events of the first game amid a remote location in Arizona (Temple Gate). One thing that’s immediately noticeable while playing the game is how different Outlast 2 feels in terms of setting and story. Outlast 2 by Red Barrels is a follow-up title to 2013’s hit horror game, Outlast. With humanoid mutilations in every corner and religion being pulled into the background, puts us off as human beings.Note: This feature contains several Outlast 2 story spoilers, including the ending. The environment is very decayed, dark and bloody. We are a cameraman, so of course we have a camera that has night vision to help us navigate our terrain and jump scares. Darkness in a horror game is must and it is intertwined very well in outlast 2. Being alone, but having that sense that there is someone in the background watching you and could possibly kill you is quite nerve-racking. But what is it that makes this game so scary compared to other horror games in the market? well first of all the realistic quality of the graphics help us immerse ourselves into the game.

The Demo took us from scene to scene, but the scares were very real and you wont be disappointed. The demo is very straight forward and leaves little to no exploring which is known is the previous Outlast games.

The rumble motors in the controller also add to the environmental fear as they activate on uneven footing, jump scares and other scripted scary events. The environment creates a very realistic sense of fear, vacant houses and all alone or are we? The game controls are very smooth and precise. The amazing noises and sounds that are created in the demo are astounding. Jump scares are well placed within the game’s demo, but it’s not only that which makes Outlast 2 demo the scariest game ever. As we progress further scripted events start to happen and all i can say is you better have brought a spare pair of underwear, you’re gonna need it. We wander through the nice neighborhood, knocking on doors and asking for help. You are in control of the main protagonist, Blake Langermann a cameraman looking for your wife, Lynn. The Outlast 2 Demo starts off exactly the same as the gameplay trailer that came out 6 months prior. If you didn’t get a chance to play it, we’ve got our playthrough on video for ya. Red Barrels got us all excited when they released the Outlast 2 Trailer that came out late April this year, 6 months later the demo was released.
